Endovascular Procedures
Today many patients can be handled by endovascular techniques rather than open bypass procedures. These procedures are done percutaneously, which allows the majority of patients to be discharged home in one day. The pain is very minimal and most procedures can be done under local anesthesia. The following types of catheters are used:
- Atherectomy- a catheter which removes plaque in the artery.
- Angioplasty- a catheter which opens blocked arteries.
- Stents- placed in areas of blockage to keep the artery open.
- Thrombolysis- use medications and catheters to dissolve blood clot in both
veins and arteries.
- EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair)- catheter systems
which allow repair of aneurysms with minimal incisions.
