Stasis Ulcers

What are they?
These are open wounds in the leg caused predominately by varicose vein disease.

What are the treatment options?
These open leg wounds have traditionally been treated with compression dressings, which in the majority of patients lead to wound healing. Although most patient wounds heal, many have reoccurring stasis ulcers. It is now known that many of these patients have severe varicose and perforator (veins which connect the superficial to deep vein)vein disease which can be treated with varicose vein surgery.

What are the results?
For the past several years, the perforators have been ligated (tied off) by an endoscopic procedure and the varices usually by closure procedure and microphlebectomy. The results are much improved today because of these new surgical techniques.

How and where is the procedure handled?
This procedure is done in an outpatient surgery center under epidural anesthesia.

How long till I get back to my normal routine?
Patients are usually back to normal activities in several days to one week.

Will this hurt?
Patients find minimal discomfort with this procedure.
